Rudolf Leuzinger (1826–1896) [1]

Orphaned at an early age, the farmer’s son grew up in a poorhouse. In 1843, he began an apprenticeship as a stonemason in Wädenswil, but as a lithography apprentice, he transferred to the Ziegler cartographic institute in Winterthur in 1844. In 1859, he moved to Glarus, where, in addition to cartography, he ran a small business with optical articles. He then moved to Bern, where he produced plans for the Forestry and Construction Directorate of the Canton of Bern from 1861 and excursion maps for the Swiss Alpine Club from 1863. From 1881 he ran a cartographic studio in Mollis. Leuzinger was known for his small-scale relief maps.
