Umiker was born in Aarburg and attended schools in schools in Lucerne and Olten. After the seminary in Wettingen, he obtained the higher teaching degree in in Zurich. From 1920-1959 he was a teacher at the girls’ secondary school in Liestal and from 1956 its principal. He was considered an expert in the natural science subjects. His great hobby was singing. He also served for many years on the boards of various singing clubs.
