Schallert was born in Brand (Vorarlberg) and first studied theology, later history and geography. After receiving his doctorate, he taught history and geography at the teacher training college in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg). He was married to Emma Neyer, who helped him produce the relief of the Principality of Liechtenstein.
